Forest Find

Overbrook Garage of Drybrook, in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, required a vehicle with a five tonne payload and preferably a crewcab. TRS Director David Starbuck set out to find a chassis to suit. After trawling through commercial magazines and web sites, found an Iveco 120E18D with very low mileage and a small crane, although it required a chassis extension, that was more than covered by the sale of the crane. The installation included a TRS500 Slideback , sliding winch assembly, 2 tonne Second Car Carrier, winch posts and sockets for side winching and removable tow bracket to the Second Car Carrier.

Megaw's Mercedes

The second TRS400 specially designed for the rigours of the salvage business, that is J M Motor Salvage of Dromore, County Down, with extra cross members and thicker deck plates, it also has an independent second car lift rated at 1,600kgs with detachable towbracket, an 8,000lb (3,620kg) hydraulic winch with an air operated clutch and a Flyer styled specifically for it’s operator. Fitted to a new Mercedes Atego 818.

Teutonic Excellence

TRS has a reputation for their ability to supply many of their products in kit form. As you would expect, this raises quality issues as to the installation of the kit. Thankfully we don’t have many that we would not be proud to put our badge on. When we send kits abroad, they are often re-badged by the installer to suit their business, with which we have no problems. However our products, especially Slidebacks, are easy to identify so we get quite a lot of feedback from potential buyers. The Iveco 80E 18S shown is an example of excellent workmanship in the installation of our kits by a German installer.

In Germany a TRS customer has taken advantage of a price reduction on the chassis, and sent it to TRS. Proprietor Andrew Lumb said ‘It’s a great little truck, ideal for our requirements and very well made. It was good to see that TRS were able to match the cab colour exactly for their bodywork, which is always difficult over here (Germany).’ The truck is now working well in Germany, collecting and delivering Renault cars.

Show Standard

M B Auto Centre, car, light commercial, Land Rover and Range Rover service and repair specialist, of  Dungarvan Co Waterford in the Republic of Ireland has taken  delivery of a new TRS350 Slideback, supplied and installed by Transportation and Recovery Systems (TRS) of Fishponds Bristol. When Henry and his son, Proprietor Michael Beresford arrived at TRS to collect their truck they were delighted with what they saw. Henry explains, ‘ I was looking for a tilt and slide system for the business and initially considered a kit, so visited the recovery show in Dublin where I met the TRS boys. I looked at the vehicles they had on display and had a long chat with Harry of TRS who demonstrated the tilt and slide that was on a Mercedes. I came to the conclusion that their bodies were the best value there, especially given the quality, and finish which I assumed was for the show. So, as you can understand, I was delighted to see, at the very least ours was up to the show standard so I am glad we went for the full installation as it was ready to go to work’.  And to work it went.Henry, with Michael at the wheel of the Mercedes Atego left TRS for Surrey to collect two Massey Ferguson tractors for delivery in the Ireland. Henry adds, ‘Timing could not have been better, to link collection of both of the tractors and the truck. You know, when I made enquiries to several TRS users, they all praised the product and the people. In our case, once the deal had been done there was an added bonus, they collected the chassis for us from Herefordshire and did some repairs to the truck cab and arranged for a new exhaust to be fitted. By the way, the roof mounted wind deflector has been removed which makes the truck look even better’. The Problem was the Colour

Thomas Ash and Sons Ltd of Glasgow had an immediate requirement for a Slideback with a decent payload and with the ability to manoeuvre through the streets of Glasgow. They saw an advertisment in a truck magazine showing a used Mercedes Atego 1017 with a new TRS400 Slideback and Second Car Carrier to the rear. Problem was the colour, blue, not a neutral colour in football mad Glasgow, like the red livery of their own fleet, so it would have to be painted if they bought it. However a good reason to buy the Atego was, it had a sleeper cab, which is easy to convert to a neat compact crewcab. The TRS400 was supplied and installed by Transportation and Recovery Systems Ltd of Fishponds Bristol and in collaboration with Otis Vehicle Rentals of Rowley Regis, West Midlands, who supplied the chassis. It has taken longer than anticipated but there is a lot of extra equipment fitted and we kept adding to it, and everything is nicely stored away. We have invested a lot in this vehicle, it’s got to last and so it had to be right.’

Extremely Helpful

Ken Allen Auto Wreckers of Morecombe Lancashire has taken delivery of a new TRS350 Slideback, supplied and installed by Transportation and Recovery Systems of Fishponds Bristol. The TRS350 with an independent second car lift is fitted to a new Iveco 75E 18S, a particular favourite with the salvage industry. Paul Gardner of Ken Allen says ‘We are delighted with the vehicle and the lads at TRS were extremely helpful to the point where they located the right chassis for us to a much higher specification than expected and at no extra cost to us.’

Right Decision

TK Motors of Bangor Co Down Northern Ireland has taken delivery of a new TRS350 Slideback, supplied and installed by Transportation and Recovery Systems Ltd of Fishponds Bristol. The TRS350 with a design capacity of 3,500 kgs, includes a fully independent second car lift rated at 1,600 kgs, and 9,000lb (4,090 kg) hydraulic winch with radio remote control. The Flyer style, new as an option from T R S and the first fitted to a new Mercedes Atego 818, is proving popular with other cutomers. Owner Tom Bell says ‘I was very close to placing an order with another supplier in the same town, but saw one of T R S’s Slidebacks on an Atego awaiting PDI at our local dealer, Mercedes Benz Truck and Van Northern Ireland. I was very impressed with build quality and paintwork, so called them for details, which I received promptly. They kept in touch throughout the build period, for example there was a requirement for a special PTO/Pump, to suit the new Mercedes gearbox, which they were able to locate quickly. Also the day before I was due to collect the truck I enquired about a free spool air clutch for the winch. The air valve arrived about the same time that I was collected from the airport. I was taken for breakfast and the job was finished when we arrived at the factory. I know I made the right decision’.

Over The Moon

‘We are over the moon with the build quality and the paintwork is superb’. Those were the words of John Megaw owner of J M Motor Salvage of Dromore Co Down who took delivery of a new TRS350 Slideback, supplied and installed by Transportation and Recovery Systems Ltd of Fishponds Bristol England. The TRS350 specially designed for the rigors of the salvage business also has an independent second car lift and a Flyer styled specifically for it’s operator, and is fitted to a new Mercedes Atego 818. John continues ‘Our operator James was slightly concerned about dealing with a new company, and attention to detail but Harry Oliver of TRS has been around for a long time and I put my faith in his promise. I called in to see their operation and to add one or two of the options offered, once the chassis had arrived with them. They have an excellent facility and our decision to go with TRS certainly has paid off because James is walking around with a huge smile on his face’.

In The Begining

Everyman Garage of Chichester, West Sussex was the first customer to purchase a recovery system from the joint venture between David Starbuck and Harry Oliver that was to become TRS. Gerald Brockhurst of Everyman had been dealing with David Starbuck for many years buying several recovery vehicles including a Heavy Underlift, so when Truk UK went into liquidation Gerald entrusted David to get a Slideback built for him. Gerald found a used MAN 224-15 and requested a 6 tonne capacity body, 1.5 tonne second Car Carrier, 8,000lb hydraulic winch with remote control and extra lockers. Supplied and installed by what is now Transportation and Recovery Systems Ltd of Fishponds Bristol, England. The TRS600 with a design capacity of 6,000 kgs, is now a well established system within the TRS range and would now include a fully independent second car lift rated at 1750 kgs.
